4 out of 5 stars Ignore the other reviews   August 18, 2010
Ordered this despite the bad reviews, which mostly read as if they were written by knuckledraggers. If you've got a desktop PC that you'd like to attach a cable feed to without involving the operating system, this is perfect. (A TV tuner card or USB tuner will allow you to record media and so forth, but it will almost certainly tax your PC and there may be problems with software and driver compatibility.) This isn't something you want to use for over-the-air TV unless you've got one of those converters for the new digital signals, and you wouldn't want to rely on the tiny embedded speaker for the audio, either.

But if you've got an existing PC monitor with speakers, this is damn near perfect. The picture-in-picture feature is not what I thought it was; it's better. It's not traditional PIP; it allows you to watch TV while you're using your computer. It's picture-in-computer-picture, which can be handy in lots of ways. The box itself is extremely compact, and the remote works well. I have not hooked up a DVD player or game system up to it, but the jacks are there to do so. Again, it does not have as sophisticated an audio card as your PC or DVD player or game system does, so if you hook them together, the sound quality you're used to will suffer somewhat; but not THAT much. (When you want superior audio quality from your PC or DVD player or game system, simply reconnect the speakers straight to it. For day-to-day tasks, however, leaving everything interconnected is perfectly fine.)

If there are too many asterisks in this review for you or you have exceptional requirements for audio and video quality, keep looking - and you'll have to spend more. But if I'd known I could've turned my PC into a perfect serviceable TV for just $40, I would've bought this years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Works Perfectly   August 14, 2010
I was really skeptical when I got the product because of all the negative reviews, but I didn't really have any other choice, since this was one of the few that were eligible for Amazon Prime... I took a chance and I am extremely happy. It works perfectly, installation was a breeze and the box came with everything needed. Quite a few channels were scanned (not sure if all), and the quality was okay (Please don't expect HD quality, this is not an HD tuner)..

5 out of 5 stars Does what it's supposed to   July 30, 2010
I bought this unit to cheaply convert an unused Acer LCD PC monitor into a TV. The picture quality isn't perfect, but for $40 I wasn't expecting perfect. The installation was simple. I hooked it up to the monitor, then to my DirecTV box and started watching TV in less than 5 minutes. I now have a TV in my spare room for $40 and also "recycled" my monitor. Definitely a win-win situation for me.

1 out of 5 stars It'sjunk   May 27, 2010
Barely lasted a year before the video from the tuner quit. The video dynamic range is better than the Geniatech I bought (which still works until it gets hot), but the video amplifier response is horrible. A lot of ghosting and character smearing. As an ex-video engineer I cannot believe the poor quality of design work being foisted on consumers. Also today's engineers overseas don't seem to know anything about supply voltage protection which is most likely the cause of the failure. Submicron semiconductor processing today does not tolerate overvoltage excursions, nor do they tolerate prolonged excessive heat before the die develops thermal fatigue. There is no good reason why attention to heat removal by using a little bit larger enclosure and heatsinking, and $0.20 of parts to stop transient voltage destruction could not be implemented for very little incremental cost.

Expect to throw this away after a few months, if you can tolerate the poor clarity.

4 out of 5 stars Agile Output Demodulator for Satellite Boxes, Video Distribution   May 27, 2010
NTSC may be dead over the airwaves but not on Satellite systems (Even HD ones) with Agile modulated output, whole house distribution systems. Most houses, like mine are wired for a coax based video distribution system so it would be a pain to re-cable the house for the newer video systems. And what if your new LCD TV can't make heads or tail out of the UHF channels output by the Satellite Box (and you don't want to pay extra for another satellite box). This tuner is basically an NTSC demodulator so you can get the coax feed and convert into a signal your LCD TV can use. Believe me, finding one has been a chore, especially one this price level. Since in this application it is connected directly to coax and not over the air, the signal strength is fine. I got lucky and mine actually works althought it does help to keep it in a place with good circulation for heat purposes (which is what I believe causes some units to fail).
